Why You Need a Running Coach, Yesterday
Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or targeting your first 5K, your injury-free breakthrough is waiting.
The Warm up
Congratulations! You've signed up for your next race (hopefully using Find The Run). But even if you didn’t, we forgive you. The important part is you’re running. You're excited, motivated, and ready to crush your goals. But here's the thing, creating an effective training plan isn't as straightforward as you might think.
Every Runner's Journey is Unique
First off, no two runners are the same. Are you brand new to running? Dealing with lingering injuries? What's your "running age"—how long have you been consistently training? What's your current weekly mileage? Have you trained for a race before, or is this uncharted territory?
These questions matter more than you realize. A cookie-cutter plan from the internet can't account for your personal history, biomechanics, or lifestyle constraints. A coach can.
Protection from the Injury Trap
If you're new to running, here's a hard truth: you don't know what you don't know. Did you know about the critical importance of Zone 2 training? The magic of variety in your workouts? How often you should incorporate speed work, and when? What about deload weeks—how often should those be? And what type of shoes should you be wearing? Are Super Shoes good for every run?
Sadly, injuries don’t care about best intentions or efforts, and it’s not the thought that counts here (it’s the experience). Even with the best coaches you can still become injured, but ramping up mileage with a coach is your best bet to make sure you achieve your goals safely.
Don't become another cautionary tale.
Experience You Can't Google
Shin splints that won't quit? Blisters that make every step agony? Hydration disasters mid-race? Completely bungled pacing that leaves you walking the last 10K? Your coach has seen it all before—and more importantly, knows how to prevent it.
Years of trial-and-error learning gets compressed into actionable wisdom. Why spend months or even years figuring out what works when someone can guide you around the common pitfalls from day one?
The Accountability Factor
Picture this: weekly 7 AM Thursday morning track workouts. When it's just you versus your alarm clock, it's surprisingly easy to hit snooze. But when someone you respect (and are happily paying) is waiting for you at the track, genuinely invested in your success? You show up.
That's the power of accountability. It transforms good intentions into consistent action.
The Overflow Effect
Here's where it gets really good. That accountability translates into showing up day after day. You stop burning mental energy trying to figure out your training—you just follow the plan. You stay injury-free. You see real, measurable progression. Running becomes fun, purposeful, and goal-oriented.
The confidence and happiness this brings doesn't stay confined to your runs. It overflows into everything else you do. Your life is challenging enough. It gets a little easier when you start your day with a successful run that moves you toward your goals.
Even Elite Athletes Need Coaches
Think you're beyond needing a coach because you've been running for years? Consider this: almost every single elite runner, from Olympic marathoners to world record holders, has a coach. Eliud Kipchoge, one of the fastest marathoners in history, still works closely with his coach. Why? Because even the most experienced athletes benefit from an outside perspective, structured periodization, and someone to make the hard decisions about training loads and recovery. If it's good enough for the world's best, it's probably good enough for the rest of us. Experience doesn't eliminate blind spots; it just makes them harder to see.
Find The Run Success Story
At Find The Run, our co-founder Julius went from being unable to run a single lap on the track without shin splints to running a 1:25 half marathon in 3 years! He’s currently targeting a sub-3 marathon and sub-5-minute mile, and continues to improve.
"I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Like how easy most of my runs should be, how to build mileage safely, when to rest, how to fuel. Now I just show up and let my coach be the brains."
For those curious, Julius works with Coach Eve, who offers virtual and in-person coaching and works with everyone from elite marathoners to those targeting their first 5K. She focuses on each client's joyful running journey, health and well-being. She offers both online and in-person coaching options.
(Find The Run receives no commission from Coach Eve—we just believe in supporting great running coaches.)
Prefer someone local who can join you for in-person workouts? We encourage you to find a local running coach! A 16-week half-marathon training plan might just change your life. The best part of your week might just become those early morning track sessions.
